A Rain Curtain - or a Precipitation Shaft (to use the official meteorological term), is a weather phenomenon, visible from the ground at large distances from the storm system, as a dark vertical shaft of heavy rain, hail, or snow, generally localized over a relatively small area. For some reason, I'm crazy about them. I think they are so beautiful. The Rain Curtain seen here is falling over New Jersey, looking like a massive wave!
This photo shows a corner of the North Meadow Ball Fields, and the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Behind the buildings, on the opposite side of the Hudson River (of which you can see a teeny sliver in the center of the photo, between two buildings) is Edgewater New Jersey, and in the distance you can see the Kittatinny Mountains of Northern New Jersey.
